Strengthening Women Farmers during the Covid-19 Pandemic
The success of agricultural performance cannot be separated from the role of women working in the agricultural sector. The position of women in agriculture is different from that of men. Women have a dual role as housewives and breadwinners at the same time. As housewives, women are also required to be breadwinners, both main and additional, especially in households where the head of the family is a woman. Women who work in the agricultural sector are involved from planting to harvesting and post-harvest activities. Usually, they work as family workers or agricultural laborers. However, there are also women who work as main farmers.
However, in the midst of the strategic role of women farmers in supporting agricultural activities, they are faced with various problems that threaten their quality of life.
Due to the threat of Covid-19, female farmers who are also housewives, are forced to face government policies in the form of implementing school from home (SFH). They must accompany their children in their education from home. This condition makes the burden on women increase because the task of educating is carried out simultaneously with taking care of the household and working.
In agriculture, women who make up almost half of Indonesia’s total population are the key to family welfare and play an important role in strengthening family food security. The Damara Bali Foundation seeks to strengthen the role of women by providing training on peanut cultivation and providing capital assistance for processing soil and peanut seeds in planting period in January 2022. This activity is carried out as an effort to support increasing the family income of poor women and their family’s food security.
