The Motivation and Courage of Poor Children to Improve Their Lives and Escape Poverty

Education is often referred to as the “breaker of the chain of poverty” because it provides access to opportunities that were previously unattainable.

The Damara Bali Foundation provides English and computer lessons for children from underprivileged families.

1. THE FIRST STEPS CHILDREN TAKE IN LEARNING ENGLISH AND THE RESULTS TODAY

Previously, the first steps in speaking English in public, or even in simple conversations, filled them with fear, anxiety, and embarrassment. Like most students in Indonesia, they experienced stage fright and were afraid of making grammatical or pronunciation mistakes. However, motivated by their teachers and a desire to connect with a wider world and improve their career prospects, they were motivated to embark on a new journey.

At first, the process felt slow. They diligently noted down new vocabulary and tried to practice it, but still felt awkward. The turning point came when they changed their learning habits to make it more enjoyable.

Significant progress occurred when they dared to practice speaking. Starting from talking with friends in class, the challenge was real because they were forced out of their comfort zone, but the supportive environment meant they did not feel burdened by their mistakes.

Now, their motivation is excellent. They are confident enough to speak in front of the class and are prepared to be interviewed in English when seeking employment.

English proficiency not only opens up better career opportunities but also broadens their horizons in exchanging knowledge and culture with people from various countries. Their journey demonstrates that with the right methods and strong determination, anyone can achieve significant progress in learning a new language.

2. IMPRESSION OF POOR CHILDREN LEARNING COMPUTER

Learning computers for children from underprivileged families has a profound impact, ranging from high enthusiasm to real access challenges.

Here are some of the main impressions and impacts observed:

Increased Self-Confidence: Early exposure to technology helps children feel more confident and independent in their activities. For those who have never touched a digital device before, mastering computers gives them a sense of equality with their more capable peers.

Brighter Future Expectations: Children who learn computers tend to feel more confident about their future. Some are even motivated to pursue higher education in computer science in order to change their family’s fate.

Development of Thinking Skills: Learning computers helps children practice logical, structured thinking and problem-solving skills. This is considered crucial preparation for  competing in an increasingly technology-based workforce.

Enthusiasm Amid Limitations: Despite often facing obstacles such as a lack of personal  devices or unstable internet access, underprivileged children show great sincerity and  perseverance when given the opportunity to learn.

Access Gap as a Major Challenge: There is still a deep educational gap because not all  students have equal access to devices and connectivity. Limited school funds often hinder  the provision of adequate computer infrastructure.

Overall, for underprivileged children, computers are not just learning tools, but a “door of opportunity” to break out of the cycle of poverty through digital literacy.

Your assistance has had a significant impact. The children are now able to study with more enthusiasm, have access to better learning materials and facilities, and have the opportunity to develop English and computer skills that will be very useful for their future.

We greatly appreciate the concern and commitment you have shown in supporting the improvement of education at the Damara Bali Foundation. We hope that this good cooperation can continue and bring wider benefits to the community.
